Editors note:  this week we launch a new feature. Youth Beat will feature young writers from our community reporting on their activities, opinions, and analyses on issues that matter to them.  Other young writers who wish to contribute to The Indy can submit manuscripts or pitch ideas at amherstindy@gmail.com.

On Wednesday, July 24th, the day of the Mueller testimonies,  Julian Hynes, Hosea Shabazz, and Marisol Pierce Bonifaz hung a handmade banner on the Town Common, facing the intersection near Amherst College, with the words “Impeach Trump Now!” Their effort was one of hundreds of banner-drops nationwide, organized by By the People, https://bythepeople.org, a youth-run organization demanding an impeachment inquiry by the time of the August congressional recess.

We believe that Donald Trump has committed multiple impeachable offenses, including using the White House for his profitable gain, interfering with Department of Justice investigations, as well as openly welcoming Russian interference in the 2016 election. The Mueller Report’s 448 pages described ten separate acts of obstruction of justice that instructs Congress to file impeachment proceedings, and yet they have resisted. House Democrats first said to wait for the Mueller report, then to wait for the unredacted Mueller report, and lastly to wait for Mueller’s testimony about the Mueller report. There is no more time to stall with excuses when our country’s democracy is threatened.

Our generation has the most at stake in this crisis. Taking action locally and nationally is necessary to address the current crisis of democracy and is an essential practice in a thriving democracy.  We urge others to join us in doing what is morally right and necessary and urge Congress to begin impeachment proceedings now.”
