PHOTO OF THE WEEK: NOCTURNAL VISITOR BY ART KEENE

Nocturnal Visitor (flying squirrel). Photo: Art Keene

We heard this little flying squirrel banging around in our kitchen during the night and found him resting on our counter in the AM. We opened all of our doors and attempted to gently guide him out of the house without success. We did get to see him fly though.

Our feature, Photo of the Week, presents each week, a new picture by a local photographer. We invite local photographers to share their photographs here.   Please include a description/caption and an indication of who is to be credited.

  1. “…guide him out of the house without success. We did get to see him fly though….”
there’s alot more to this story ! Love to hear it.

I grew up pretty rural. Cats, dogs ran freely. Visited neighbors, got petted, snacks and good words. Not today, not in suburbia either. We didn’t change our ways w/the cats till one brought several of these beautiful, very small creatures home. We were pretty upset. Started our 1st litter box then’n there (’78/’82?). Cats didn’t seem to mind the new lifestyle. Please do likewise if owning. If raising this way they do even better.

  2. People have asked so here’s an update. As far as we know, the critter retreated into our walls. We thought we heard him there a few days ago but no indications since. We have set a havaheart trap but are hoping that he has left the premises on his own.
