The 5k Fall Foliage And Cider Run is a community celebration of Amherst A Better Chance, a residential high school program that prepares academically talented young men of color from educationally underserved school districts for college and future leadership roles.

Run or walk to support Amherst A Better Chance and enjoy a cup of cider at the finish line! The walk/run starts at Amherst Town Common, partly circles Amherst College campus and enters the woodlands of The Amherst College bird sanctuary, highlighted by a beautiful view over the Pelham Hills. Finally, it follows the Norwottuck Rail Trail back to the campus. Upon completion, runners and walkers are invited to enjoy a cup of cider and healthy snacks while we await the results and then award prizes.

Event History
An Amherst tradition for 49 years, this event has brought hundreds of members of the community together annually to admire the colorful foliage while they walk or run in support and celebration of diversity and educational opportunity in our community. Since 1968, Amherst ABC has played a critical role in changing the face of leadership in American society, selecting highly qualified young men of color from under-resourced school districts whose courageous families seek a brighter future for their sons.

About ABC
ABC is a national residential high school program which prepares academically talented and highly motivated African American, Latino, Asian, and Native American students from educationally underserved school districts for college and future leadership roles in the broader community. Since the program began, over 130 students have attended Amherst Regional High School which offers a rich college preparatory curriculum and a diverse array of extracurricular and sports activities. Graduates have attended more than 50 colleges and universities.

Scholars live family-style in the ABC House at 74 North Prospect Street in downtown Amherst. ABC Resident Directors provide a warm supportive environment enriched by daily sessions with Amherst College tutors. ABC Board members, community mentors and ARHR faculty and staff also offer guidance and support. ABC Scholars forge lasting bonds with local host families through monthly weekend visits and additional enrichment activities.

While many Amherst ABC Scholars come from urban neighborhoods in Massachusetts and New York, some have come from as far away as Ohio, Indiana, Arkansas and New Mexico. The ABC Program depends on proceeds of the annual ABC Walk each fall to maintain this high successful residential model. Thanks to those of you who have supported us in the past.
