The Town of Amherst is exploring new on-street electric vehicle charging options with support through the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) On-Street Charging Solutions Program. All residents are encouraged to participate in a short survey to guide decisions on locations for potential stations, as well as opportunities and challenges related to public electric vehicle (EV) charging access in Amherst.

Complete the survey here: amherstma.gov/EV-Charging-Survey

The survey is open through Friday, July 25.

The town identified which locations would be most feasible for on-street EV charging and listed them in the survey. Residents can use the survey to rate the proposed locations, list sites that may have been overlooked, and share preferences and concerns. Community feedback is crucial to ensure that charging infrastructure is accessible, equitable, and convenient for all Amherst residents and businesses.

According to MassCEC, access to charging can be a significant barrier to electric vehicle adoption for renters and residents without a dedicated driveway, garage, or parking space. On-street charging options offer promising solutions to ensure all residents have access to sufficient charging options.

The Town of Amherst was selected as one of 21 municipalities to receive support for an EV charging feasibility study through the MassCEC On-Street Charging Solutions Program, with funding provided by the MassCEC in partnership with Commonwealth Electric Technologies (CET) and Leidos. This study will recommend specific on-street charging technologies and locations, identify key stakeholders, propose a project timeline, and estimate total project costs. The results of the feasibility study will support future grant applications to help pay for the installation of on-street EV charging stations.
