Amherst Mobile Market (AMM) is a community driven, multilingual farmers market that delivers high-quality fresh, affordable, local, and culturally desirable foods to Amherst communities challenged by poor food access and limited income. On a typical market day the AMM van travels to local farms, purchases fresh fruit and vegetables, and sets up a portable market at a predetermined location that is designated as a “food desert” by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Residents in these areas are also largely low-income and BIPOC.
At the AMM, fruits and vegetables are sold at substantially discounted prices in recognition of the limited financial resources of families in the communities served, the majority of whom receive supplemental nutrition assistance program benefits (SNAP or food stamps). Unsold fresh food is donated to the Amherst Survival Center at the end of the day.
In 2025, the AMM will operate for 20 weeks beginning Wednesday, June 11 at the following sites:
North Amherst at University Village Bus Stop, Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Colonial Village Apartments, next to Bus Stop inside the complex, Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
East Hadley Road, next to the Bicycle Station, Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
In addition to bringing fresh produce to communities, the AMM provides a gathering place for community development. Markets are often accompanied by other resources, such as those offered by the Amherst Health Department.

The AMM aims to become financially sustainable in the next five years. The AMM is for everyone and all are welcome and encouraged to visit, to buy the fresh produce and join in on the Market’s community development activities. Approximately 80% of produce is purchased from local farms at wholesale prices, thus supporting our farms and promoting local economic development. In 2024, AMM’s first full year of independent operations, the markets served nearly 200 families, with more than 95% being SNAP qualified. AMM’s business model plans to increase the number of people reached by at least 25% each year. The AMM also offers a limited number of free shares to those in need.
AMM’s Vision
AMM envisions neighborhoods where all people have easy and sustained access to high-quality fresh, local, affordable, and culturally desirable foods, close to their homes. AMM envisions welcoming communities where everyone can access the knowledge they seek, develop, and use their own unique voice and find belonging and respect among their neighbors.
