The Town of Amherst announced on July 30, that swimming is not recommended at the North Beach of Puffer’s Pond due to E. Coli readings in excess of the state’s safe limits. Swimming is still allowed at the South Beach where readings still meet the standard for safe swimming. This week’s water quality testing produced readings of 307.6 MPN /100ml at North Beach and 64.4 MPN/100 ml at South Beach. The state safe limit is 235 MPN/100 ml.

The Town conducts weekly water quality testing during the swimming season (Memorial Day – Labor Day). Results are typically posted on Wednesday afternoon.

The Department of Public Health is the entity charged with making the decision about closure for swimming and is the point of contact for questions. The Department of Public Health can be contacted by emailing publichealth@amherstma.gov or calling 413-259-3077.
