The Amherst, Pelham, and Amherst-Pelham Regional School Districts have completed districtwide training in Handle With Care (HWC). This national human services program helps educators provide immediate, compassionate support to students who may have been exposed to trauma.

The training was led by the Amherst Regional Public Schools’ Family Center in partnership with the Children’s Advocacy Center of Hampshire County. Through the Handle With Care system, first responders notify schools when a child has been present at a traumatic incident. The notice is confidential and includes only the student’s name, age, school, and the phrase “Handle With Care.” No further details are shared. The goal is to give educators a discreet signal that the child may need additional patience, understanding, or support during the school day.

“The safety, care, and well-being of our students is a priority for our staff in all of our schools,” said Dr. Marta Guevara, Executive Director of Family Advocacy and Student Well-Being. “By knowing a student has been exposed to a traumatic event, staff can provide the necessary first steps to support them. We learned how a simple, confidential ‘heads up’ to our schools can help mitigate the negative effects of trauma on a child’s well-being and learning.”

“This program is another way we are ensuring that every student feels seen, supported, and cared for in our schools,” said Superintendent Dr. E. Xiomara Herman. “Handle With Care allows us to better respond in the moment and connect children with resources that support their long-term well-being.”

The training emphasized that HWC is not about labeling students but about fostering a culture of trust and responsiveness. Educators are encouraged to use these notifications to quietly adjust expectations, offer flexibility, and connect students with in-school mental health supports when appropriate.

With training now complete, all staff across the three districts are prepared to implement Handle With Care this school year. Families who would like to learn more are encouraged to contact the ARPS Family Center at (413) 362-1859.
