Letter: I’m Voting for Vince in District 1
Vince O'Connor
As a 16-year resident of Amherst and the librarian at Wildwood School, I’m voting for Vincent O’Connor for Town Council in District 1. I’m supporting him because of his commitment to our schools. When budget cuts eliminated our elementary school library paraeducators two years ago, it was devastating. Vince’s proposal to have the school committee’s budgets directly submitted to the Amherst Town Council – bypassing the unelected town manager – would allow for more transparency and public input. This approach could prevent the consistent underfunding of our schools that we’ve seen in recent years. As a long-time resident and engaged citizen, Vince would bring a valuable perspective to the Town Council. We’d be lucky to have him representing District 1.

I have known VInce O’Connor since the late 1970s. He and I have worked together on some issues and we have been opponents on other issues over the years. Occasionally he has asked me for money not for himself, but to be paid directly to people in Amherst who are in need. He has lived a life of service to others, dedicated to following his principles. He also is one of the smartest people I have ever met. He studies and analyzes public issues thoroughly. Vince is a mensch (which translates from Yiddish as a person of integrity and honor). While one may disagree with his position on particular issues, you can be sure he is not being influenced by any special interest. A vote for Vince is a vote for a true public servant.
I agree that Vince is well informed, a mensch, honest, and would make an excellent town councilor.
Michael and Ira and all,
A mensch indeed!
A man of peace and justice, Vince also has deep roots in the law and in the sciences, putting this in practice to support people and the natural environment.
A diversity of folks in our neighborhood have lawns sporting green O’CONNOR signs: we’re all going to
VOTE VINCE
Yes Vince for District 1! I have known Vince since I was a little kid at Mark’s Meadow, knocking on our door advocating for justice and legislative goals to improve our town. Vince is a thoughtful, committed, and experienced advocate for our community, and I believe he is exactly the kind of leader Amherst needs.
What truly sets Vince apart is his deep understanding of Amherst’s unique political landscape. He’s not only aware of the complexities that come with our form of local governance—he embraces them, and brings forethought, clarity, and balance to his approach. Vince doesn’t just respond to issues—he anticipates them, and proposes thoughtful strategies that reflect his commitment to long-term progress.
I support Vince!
