Photo of the Week: UMass Design Build Small House

The students of the UMass Architecture Department, under the direction of Professor Carl Fiocchi and the team at UMass Design Build have been constructing small houses from scratch for the last few semesters: small low-carbon or net-zero houses intended as affordable housing. This one — called Casita de Vida — is scheduled to join its neighbors in Holyoke in mid-November.

  1. Great photo! Just a quick correction: This is actually a joint project of the UMass Department of Architecture, the Building and Construction Technology program, and the Five Colleges Architectural Studies program. Lead faculty are Carl Fiocchi, Rob Williams, and Naomi Darling.

  2. In new construction if you shrink the size you may not cut costs. The most expensive rooms are Kitchen, & Bathrooms. Eliminating the guest bedroom saves almost nothing. You still need the heating system, the two car garage, and all the same sub-contrators.
