Amherst will read the recent proclamation passed by the Town Council proclaiming July 2025 as Disability Pride Month and raise the Disability Pride flag in front of Town Hall at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16. The flag raising will be followed by the free showing of the film The Ride Ahead in the large activity room at the Bangs Center at 5 p.m. A discussion of the film will follow. Refreshments will be served. The public is invited to both the ceremony and the film and discussion.

The Ride Ahead tells the story of Samuel Habib, a 21-year-old navigating adulthood with a disability with the help of other disabled adults who understand some of the challenges he faces in trying to plan out his life. The screening will have closed captioning and an ASL interpreter, as well as audio descriptions. Participants are encouraged to wear masks if they are able.

The events in Amherst are part of a series of movies being shown across Hampshire County as part of a film festival for Disability Pride Month. The film Patrice was shown in Easthampton on July 5. Tallywacker will be screened at the Northampton Senior Center on Tuesday, July 29.

  1. The best way for the Town of Amherst to celebrate the Disabled is to make sidewalks safe for pedestrians and wheelchairs with even pavement and enforcement of no cyclists or motorized conveyances on sidewalks. And by clearing bus stops of debris and snow. Make it possible to be disabled AND SAFE to be out and about in Amherst
