Forty-four years ago, jazz greats Max Roach, Billy Taylor, and Fred Tillis founded Jazz in July. What began as a one-week study of jazz improvisation has grown into a nationally recognized program connecting aspiring jazz students with some of the nation’s most respected jazz educators and performers.

Now a two-week immersive program, Jazz in July offers an intensive study of improvisation, jazz theory, and culture. Through masterclasses, lectures, jam sessions, and public performances, students from across the country connect to hone their skills and to engage in the social and political thinking of jazz artists past and present. It’s a transformative opportunity for young musicians to grow both musically and intellectually.

This summer’s program kicks off next week week. From July 14 through July 25, the sounds of young, talented jazz musicians and the nation’s best jazz educators will fill UMass classrooms and stages. And throughout the program, participants have the chance to perform for the community, giving them skills needed to enter the world of jazz, and giving you the opportunity to witness tomorrow’s top jazz talent.

Mark your calendars. On Wednesdays July 9 and 16 at 7 p.m., Club Jazz in July features vocalists and instrumental combos in a relaxed club atmosphere at the at the UMass Campus Center. On Fridays July 18, drop by Bezanson Recital Hall between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. for Jazz Futures, the concert featuring student combos. Then on Friday July 25 at 5 p.m., make your way to the Amherst Town Common for the Jazz in July All-Stars Concert, a round-robin style concert showcasing collaborations between nationally and internationally recognized Jazz in July faculty.

Come hear the future of jazz.
