Puffer’s Pond is closed to swimming until further notice due to high levels of E. coli bacteria. Testing on July 15 yielded readings of 387.3 MPN/100 ml at the south beach. The state’s maximum safe limit for E. Coli is 235 MPN/100 ml.

The Town conducts weekly water quality testing during the swimming season (Memorial Day – Labor Day). Results are typically posted by Wednesday afternoon at www.amherstma.gov/puffers. You can find a FAQ about Puffers at the same link.

The Department of Public Health is the entity charged with making the decision about closure for swimming and is the point of contact for questions. The Department of Public Health can be contacted by emailing publichealth@amherstma.gov or calling 413 259 3077.

  1. What happened with the promise of upstream testing?
And what about limiting dog access to the south portion at least for some weeks to see if it has an impact on the water quality
