UMass Events Will Honor 150th Anniversary Of Arbor Day

The UMass Amherst Arboretum Committee has planned a series of Tree Planting Events to honor Earth Day and the 150th anniversary of Arbor Day. The events are as follows.
April 15: Free seedling giveaway on Goodell Lawn at UMass. 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
April 22: Planting of the Class Tree, East Side of Curry Hicks Building at Noon.
Free Seedling Giveaway on the Goodell Lawn at UMass. Noon – 4 p.m.
April 29: Tree Walk. 10 a.m. to Noon. Meet at the southeast corner of the South College building at UMass. A tree climbing demonstration will follow the tree walk.
According to the Arbor Day Foundation, the first Arbor Day was in Nebraska on April 10, 1872. It is estimated that 1 million trees were planted that day in Nebraska. In the next several years, many states passed legislation to recognize Arbor Day, and by 1920, 45 states and U.S. territories were celebrating Arbor Day.Ā
