The Amherst College Department of Athletics, in partnership with the Town of Amherst and Amherst Recreation Department, is proud to host National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) for the third year in a row, on Saturday, February 7, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. at the Alumni Gym. This event, dedicated to honoring the achievements of girls and women in sports, aims to recognize the power of sports and play in unlocking limitless potential.
NGWSD at Amherst College will provide girls and non-binary youth in grades 4-8 with a unique and welcoming opportunity to explore various sports, play, and have fun together. Participants will be divided into smaller groups to practice a variety of fundamental skills in different sports (no prior experience required). The event will feature activities led by women’s sports teams, including squash, golf, crew, soccer, field hockey, softball, tennis, and volleyball.
The program will kick off in Middleton Gymnasium at 11 a.m. with snacks. Girls will then be divided into groups so they can try each sport offered through a continuous timed rotation. The official start time is 11:30 a.m.
Parents may drop off their children at 11 a.m. and pick them up at the conclusion of the event (2:45 p.m.). For parents who choose to stay, Christine Paradis will offer a yoga class for adults in the Friends of Amherst Athletics Room at 12:30 p.m.
Amherst College invites the community to join in this celebration of girls and women in sports, fostering a love for physical activity and teamwork. For more information, please contact Jennifer Chuks at jchuks@amherst.edu.
All participants and their families are invited to cheer on the Amherst College women’s ice hockey team as they take on Colby College at 3 p.m. in Orr Rink. Admission is free and pizza will be served.
