The Amherst Police Department got a new member in its new comfort dog, a chocolate English lab puppy donated by Peggi and Dave Brogan of Boonefield Labradors in New Hampshire.  A poll to name the puppy drew over 6,000 entries and thousands more on Facebook.  The winning name was “Winston.”

Winston will be sworn in on September 10 and will work with his partner, Neighborhood Liaison Officer Bill Laramee, to foster positive relationships between the Police Department and the community. Winston will participate in outreach programs and aid in sensitive case investigations. He is expected to provide a positive influence in the Department and the Town, according to Police Chief Scott Livingstone.
