This year the ceremonial lighting of the Merry Maple was conducted virtually on December 4 and broadcast on Amherst Media. The decision to forgo the usual public lighting was made in deference to the pandemic and  in the service of public health. The 26-minute celebration can be viewed here.

The festivities include a welcome from the Chamber of Commerce and BID, songs, dance, the UMass Marching Band, and a reading of “The Broken Ornament” by Spiderwick Chronicles author Tony DiTerlizzi.
