Letter: Which Signatures Count?

The following letter was sent to the Amherst Town Council and Town Manager on May 12, 2021

Why do citizens have to sue the Town to have their signatures counted?

This is a scandalous situation. Never in sixty years have I encountered anything like this in Amherst. Town employees have always bent over backwards to be friendly and accountable. I am sure there are legal remedies that KP Law isn’t offering once they and the Town have dug in their heels.

It is also curious that so many well-known, longtime residents, former Town employees, former Town Meeting members and even the spouse of a former Select Board member are on the non-certified list!

Citizens want answers and a resolution that doesn’t include the justice system. It also appears that the Board of Registrars may need its own independent Counsel.

I pray this travesty can be resolved quickly and amicably. I do not have a stake in the fate of the Jones library or anything else here but the political process which I believe has been abridged.
