In response to the band Dinosaur Jr.’s J. Mascis’ assertion in The Boston Globe that “Amherst has the worst food anywhere,” the Amherst Business Improvement District (BID) has offered a challenge for residents to prove him wrong.

From February 5 to April 15, the BID invites people to take a dinosaur to dine at one of Amherst’s many eateries and photograph the dinosaur and the meal. After posting the photo to their FaceBook or Instagram site and tagging the post with The Boston Globe, downtown Amherst, Dinosaur Jr, and J. Mascis, along with a description of why they like the restaurant, they will be entered in a weekly drawing for a $50 gift certificate to their favorite restaurant. There will be 10 weekly drawings.

A list of participating restaurants follows.

30 Boltwood • Amherst Coffee • Antonio’s • Arigato Japanese Restaurant • Bistro 63 • Bruegger’s Bagels • Bruno’s Pizza & Subs • Bueno y Sano • Coronation Café • Crazy Noodle • DP Dough • Formosa • Fresh Side Eatery • Garcia’s Mexican Restaurant • GoBerry & Cream • Insomnia Cookies • Iya Sushi & Noodle Kitchen • Johnny’s Tavern • Kwench Juice Café • La Veracruzana • Lao Hu Tang • Lili’s • LimeRed Teahouse • Mexcalito • Miss Saigon • Möge Tee • Momo Tibetan Restaurant • Oriental Flavor • Osteria Vespa • Panda East • Paradise of India • Pasta E Basta • Pita Pockets • Primo Too Pizzeria • Protocol • Royal Chicken & Kebab • Share Coffee • Subway • Taqueria del Pueblo • The Taste Thai Cuisine • The Archives • The Black Sheep • The Humble Peach • The Works Café • Uptown Tap & Grill • ViVi Bubble Tea. • White Lion Brewing Company

The notice for the challenge states, “PS – this is all in good fun, no need to take the low road and bash J. or Dino Jr. Let’s have fun, support our small businesses and enjoy the incredible food we are so very lucky to have in downtown Amherst! Game on J!”

  1. I must say this is a fun response. I’ll be gladly dining with my parasaurolophus to support our local businesses.

  2. I hope that the Toy Box has a good selection of dinosaurs in stock. I’ll be looking for mine today.

  3. Mascis is right, with the exception of less than 5 places. Amherst restaurants need to up their game!

  4. I went to Formosa last night and was pleasantly surprised that they have a new very extended menu. Even though the place was packed and the kitchen backed up the food was excellent.
