This female ruby throated hummingbird is pictured feeding from cardinal flowers, one of the showiest wildflowers in New England. These plants rely primarily on hummingbirds as their pollinators. Photos were taken at a shutter speed of 1/2000th of a second, fast enough to “freeze” the wings as they beat 50 times per second. “Hummers” will soon leave the area for their winter homes in Mexico and Central America, and will return next spring with the blooming of early spring flowers like the grape hyacinth.

I had a giant black swallowtail butterfly that was twice as big as this hummingbird drinking from my phlox. No camera handy though.
