The Pioneer Valley Folklore Society’s monthly Song & Story Swap, now in its twenty-seventh year, will feature folksinger Jennie McAvoy on Saturday April 6 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at First Church, 165 Main Street in Amherst. Parking is available in the lot behind the church.

Trained as a mezzo-soprano, McAvoy is a polished traditional ballad singer whose rock-solid voice is deftly complemented by superb acoustic guitar fingerpicking. She is a discriminating song collector with a repertoire that spans centuries. Eleven of her favorites may be heard on her CD, “So Long on
the Flood
,” on which she is backed up by guitar master, Brooks Williams.

McAvoy was born in New York City, raised in the Hudson River Valley, and now makes South Deerfield, Massachusetts, her home.

The Song & Story Swap is open to members of the public of all ages. Admission is free, with a suggested minimum donation to the artist of $7.50.

Attendees will be invited to contribute a song or story on the topic of “Relationships” during an opening round of sharing.People of all ages gather to share stories and songs that are traditional, newly written, or of personal experiences. You can tell, sing, or lead everyone in singing, or request a song or story.  Listeners are welcome.
