The Amherst Media Board of Directors has named Rachel Figurasmith as executive director, beginning July 7. Ms. Figurasmith replaces Interim Executive Director Yanna Ok, who will be retained as a consultant for the transition.

Figurasmith is a seasoned nonprofit executive who has supported dozens of organizations across the United States. Her leadership style focuses on centering equity in moments of transition, while supporting and stabilizing critical community organizations. A Hampshire College alum and educator at heart, her professional trajectory has been defined by community service. Figurasmith is a queer mom of three living in Pelham with her family. She sits on the Pelham School Committee, and is excited to lead Amherst Media in this next stage.

“The board of directors asked Yanna Ok to serve as interim executive director nearly one year ago,” said Board President Vira Douangmany. “In that time, Amherst Media boosted our partnerships and collaborations with local groups and organizations, and strengthened our relationship with the Town of Amherst. We held the finest gala ever, bringing together former board members, employees, and interns, along with a broad cross section of residents to celebrate community media, and continuing the tradition of shining light to those who uplift Amherst through the coveted Jean Haggerty Award. We are exceedingly grateful to Ms. Ok’s courageous leadership and fidelity to our non-profit organization.”

Town Manager Paul Bockelman expressed congratulations to Amherst Media on hiring Figurasmith “…at an important time as we head into renewing the town’s license with Comcast.” Bockelman lauded Ms. Ok with these remarks:

“Yanna stepped in to lead Amherst Media at a critical time. She quickly connected with many people and community groups and elevated the profile of Amherst Media in the community. With her upbeat optimism and strong work ethic, she built a strong working relationship with the town. Under her leadership, Amherst Media, in partnership with the Amherst Historical Society created the landmark exhibit ‘Cambodians in Amherst: The History of the Khmer Community’ which elevated the lives and experiences of the Cambodian community in Amherst. It was eye-opening. Thank you, Yanna.”
