Superintendent of Public Works, Guilford Mooring, announced a schedule of upcoming road repairs that will require road closures from now into the fall. The Department of Public Works (DPW) continues work on various construction projects to improve the town’s roads and sidewalks. The notice below includes information about each project and how traffic may be impacted. Work will typically occur Monday through Friday between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. All work is weather-dependent; severe weather will delay the work schedule by a day, or new announcements will be posted.

Snell Street Closure

  • Monday and Tuesday, April 20-21
  • DPW crews will be performing roadway milling and repaving of Snell Street under the Norwottuck Rail Trail bridge crossing.
  • Snell Street will be closed to all traffic between House #208 Snell St and Moody Field Road. Either side of the road will still be accessible via either South Pleasant St or Northampton Road.
  • Public Works employees opted to work the Monday holiday in order to minimize disruption of normal weekday traffic.

South East Street Shoulder Construction

  • Week of April 20
  • Palmer Paving and Fillion’s Landscaping will be completing the installation of roadway shoulder loam and planting of grass seed from Valley View Dr to Mill Ln.
  • South East Street will remain open to traffic but delays should be expected.

North Pleasant Street Sidewalks

  • Ongoing through at least early June.
  • Taylor Davis Construction will continue work to reconstruct and widen the existing sidewalks on North Pleasant Street between Hobart Lane and Fisher Street.
  • North Pleasant Street will remain open to traffic, but delays should be expected. Construction activities are expected to impact a single lane of traffic, causing the street to be reduced to a single lane with alternating traffic.

University Drive and Amity St Roundabout

  • Ongoing through October.
  • Baltazar Construction is building a roundabout at the intersection of University Drive and Amity Street.
  • The intersection will remain open to traffic, but delays should be expected. Construction activities are expected to temporarily impact a single lane of traffic, causing some streets to be reduced to a single lane with alternating traffic.
  • This roundabout will enhance the safety and traffic flow at this critical intersection that connects UMass Amherst, downtown, and future developments.
  • The project is primarily being funded through a nearly $2 million grant awarded by the state through the MassWorks Infrastructure Program.

Reminders

  • Follow all directions given by detail officers and on-site engineer during construction.
  • Expect traffic delays and seek alternate routes.
  • On-street parking is prohibited during construction operations. Vehicles will be towed.
  • Drive slowly and exercise caution when driving through the construction zone.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work to improve our roads. For questions or additional information concerning these projects, please contact the Amherst Department of Public Works at 413-259-3050 or at publicworks@amherstma.gov
