Leaks at Middle School Persist Following Costly Roof Replacement

School Superintendent Dr, E. Xiomara Herman (Dr. Xi) informed Amherst Regional Middle School (ARMS) and Chestnut Street Academy families in a Sept. 1 email that the recently replaced Middle School roof still leaks. On the first day of school, staff found water in three classrooms and several hallways and shared spaces. Classes have been relocated as necessary.

Leaks in classrooms, mold, poor air quality, and falling ceiling tiles were persistent problems at ARMS last year. Repairs on the roof began over the summer and were only completed last week. The first day of school for ARMS and Chestnut Street Academy students was delayed until Monday, Aug. 31, because of air quality concerns. The Regional School Committee is scheduled to meet next week on Sept. 8 to discuss the condition of the roof.

Greetings ARMS and Chestnut Street Academy Staff and Families,

Keeping our students and staff safe remains our priority. Due to this morning’s heavy rainfall, water entered several areas on the instructional side of the ARMS building.

What We Know

• Water was identified in three classrooms and portions of several hallways and shared spaces.
• Some ceiling tiles were affected by the water.
• At this time, no Chestnut Street Academy classrooms or spaces have been affected.
• Classes are continuing, with students and staff being relocated as needed.

What We Are Doing

• The affected classrooms and areas are being relocated or restricted as needed.
• Our custodial team is actively cleaning and addressing the water.
• The roofing contractor and the District’s project management team are on-site assessing the affected areas.
• We are continuing to monitor the building for any additional water intrusion.

What’s Next

• The District and its project partners will complete a full assessment and determine what additional work is needed.
• We will share a more detailed update later today once the assessment is complete.
• We will communicate sooner if there are any changes affecting students, staff, or school operations.
