Registration for Town’s Hazardous Waste Day Closes Oct. 19

The town’s 2026 household hazardous waste collection event will be held on October 31st at Wildwood School, 71 Strong Street from 9 a.m. to Noon. Registration is now open online. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Register here.

PARTICIPATION

• Registration must be completed by 10/19/26
• All Amherst, Pelham, Hadley, & Shutesbury residents may participate. Other non-Amherst residents may participate only by special arrangement; please call 413-259-3049
• Small businesses in communities listed above may participate and will be charged full disposal cost.
  

QUANTITY

• Liquid quantity is based on container size, not residual amount (a partially full one gallon can is considered one gallon).
• Weights of non-liquid materials such as fertilizer are based on estimates by event staff.
• Total quantity is based on a combination of gallons and pounds. Example: Three 1-gallon cans of paint and a 10-pound bag of fertilizer = 13
• A Small Load is a total quantity of gallons and pounds below three.
• A Half Load is between 3 and 10.
• A Full Load is beteeen 10 and 25.

FEES

• NON-AMHERST RESIDENTS: Must pay the full fee at the time of the event. Rates are as follows:
• $45 for a Small Load.
• $60 for a Half Load.
• $100 for a Full Load
  
• AMHERST RESIDENTS:
• There will be a $40 participation fee for all participants. This fee will pay for the disposal of up to one Full Load (25 gallons/pounds)
• Any fee above one Full Load must be paid for by the participant at the time of the event. Rates are as follows:
• $45 for a Small Load
• $60 for a Half Load
• $100 for a Full Load
• These additional fees only apply if you are above your one Full Load threshold. Example: Amherst resident has 35 total gallons/pounds. The total disposal fee will be $100 ($40 participation fee + $60 for the extra half load).
• All fluorescent blubs are subject to a $1 per bulb fee. Several area home improvement stores will accept them at no charge.
• CASH AND CHECKS ONLY

WHAT TO LEAVE AT HOME

• * NO LATEX/ACRYLIC PAINT products will be accepted at this event. Instructions for safe disposal of latex paints are available on the town website: www.amherstma.gov/recycling.
  
• *MOTOR OIL- There will be a separate $10 per gallon fee for motor oil brought to the event. For a list of local businesses that accept motor oil go to Amherstma.gov/recycling.
  
• PLEASE NOTE: Veolia Industries offers a year-round, fee-based collection facility in Westfield, MA. For households with small quantities, this may represent a cheaper option.
