Paintings by Gordon M. Green and Evelyn Pye at Gallery A3

Mid-sized oil paintings by Gordon M. Green use small, painterly gestures to create a series of pulsating abstract landscapes in ALLITERATIONS while Evelyn Pye works with 12-inch square panels of oil paint on wood to recreate a summer garden’s impression of abundant immersion in RADICAL HOPE.

In a recent series of mid-sized oil paintings, Green uses an intentionally limited repertoire of small painterly gestures to create varied abstract landscapes, in a kind of visual alliteration. These gestures — falling somewhere between pointillistic dabs of color and longer, more linear strokes — flock together in colorful improvisations. Paralleling Green’s concurrent work as a composer, each painting asserts its own tone and rhythm, where similar “visual syllables” come together to form a different sense of space, hinting at varied paths and horizons that playfully entwine. Evelyn Pye, RADICAL HOPE
Working with oil paint on 12 X 12” wood panels, Evelyn Pye depicts different angles and perspectives on plant life to recreate the feeling of immersion in a burgeoning summer garden. Some panels are freestanding while others join together in a visual rhythm of duets or quartets. The overall effect is one of vibrancy and the exultation of color, rhythm, and motion. Always budding, flowering, and dying, the garden is a profusion of color and life. From that profusion, let our capacity for invention and our ability to create, give us radical hope.
