What Are Our Campuses Doing to Decarbonize?

From a new net-zero school and eliminating the use of fossil fuels in town facilities like the Jones Library, to supporting a heat pump incentive program for residents, Amherst has been working under difficult financial constraints to reduce greenhouse (GHG) emissions townwide.
But in many ways, the GHG emission from the town are minor compared to those of the colleges. Because of their combined heat and power plant, UMass Amherst is the largest greenhouse gas emitter in the State’s portfolio. Buildings – primarily heat from fossil fuels – are the largest source of GHG in our area, and the campuses account for the majority of these emissions. What are our campuses doing to decarbonize?
If you want some answers, please join us at the Amherst Energy and Climate Action Committee’s Webinar, “Decarbonizing the Campuses”, this coming Wednesday, April 22 at 6:30 pm, by zoom: https://zoom.us/j/95283460251. Ezra Small (UMass Amherst), Steve Roof (Hampshire College) and Wes Dripps (Amherst College) will talk about their respective campuses’ decarbonization efforts. A Q&A will follow, so bring your questions!
