The Department of Public Works (DPW) is continuing to work on various construction projects to improve our roads and sidewalks across town. This notice includes information about each project and how traffic may be impacted. Work will typically occur Monday through Friday between 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.. All work is weather-dependent; severe weather will delay the work schedule by a day, or new announcements will be posted. Expect traffic delays and seek alternate routes.

Road Work

Lincoln Ave, Flat Hills Road, Hop Brook Road, Kestrel Lane

  • Started on May 26. Ongoing for a few weeks.
  • Palmer Paving will complete any remaining structure adjustments on Lincoln Ave (south end) and Flat Hills Rd (north end) starting on Monday, June 1.
  • The top coat for Flat Hills Rd and Lincoln Ave is scheduled for Thursday, June 4 and Friday, June 5.
  • All roads will remain open to traffic but delays should be expected.
  • Updates on continuing work will follow weekly.

Sidewalk Work

Intersection of College Street and South East Street

  • Started on May 26. Ongoing for two to three weeks.
  • Caracas Construction will continue the removal and replacement of sidewalks around the intersection of College St and South East St.
  • These sidewalk replacements area expected to last approximately two to three weeks.
  • All roads will remain open to traffic but delays should be expected.

University Dr and Amity St Roundabout

  • Ongoing through October.
  • Baltazar Construction is building a roundabout at the intersection of University Drive and Amity Street.
  • The intersection will remain open to traffic, but delays should be expected. Construction activities are expected to temporarily impact a single lane of traffic, causing some streets to be reduced to a single lane with alternating traffic.
  • This roundabout will enhance the safety and traffic flow at this critical intersection that connects UMass Amherst, downtown, and future developments.
  • The project is primarily being funded through a nearly $2 million grant awarded by the state through the MassWorks Infrastructure Program.

Reminders

  • Follow all directions given by detail officers and on-site engineer during construction.
  • Expect traffic delays and seek alternate routes.
  • On-street parking is prohibited during construction operations. Vehicles will be towed.
  • Drive slowly and exercise caution when driving through the construction zone.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work to improve our roads. For questions or additional information concerning these projects, please contact the Amherst Department of Public Works at 413-259-3050 or at publicworks@amherstma.gov
