Herrell’s Ice Cream, one of the Valley’s most beloved ice cream makers, will celebrate the grand opening of its permanent Mill District location with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 2 p.m on Friday, July 31, at its new permanent storefront at 69 Cowls Road. The event is hosted by the Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce in partnership with bankESB and The Mill District.

Community members are invited to attend, meet the Herrell’s team, and celebrate the opening of the shop’s new permanent home. Guests will also enjoy giveaways and 15% off any purchases at the Amherst location throughout the grand opening.

The grand opening is free and open to the public. It also offers an opportunity for residents and visitors to experience everything the Mill District has to offer. In addition to Herrell’s, visitors can enjoy locally owned restaurants, cafés, specialty food shops, boutiques, services, public art, outdoor gathering spaces, and a variety of community events.

The celebration will continue with the Under The Tent Movie Event at 6:00 p.m. on July 31st (alcohol-free event). For updates and more information, follow Herrell’s Ice Cream on Instagram at @herrellsmilldistrictamherst and on Facebook and TikTok at @herrellsmilldistrict.

After opening a successful pop-up shop in the Mill District in the summer of 2024, Herrell’s has now officially relocated into its permanent storefront , expanding its presence in Amherst while continuing the tradition that has made it a regional favorite for generations. Founded in 1980, Herrell’s pioneered the modern gourmet ice cream movement through its commitment to handcrafted, small-batch ice cream, fun toppings, and innovative flavors. Today, the business is owned and operated by Judy Herrell, who has guided the company while preserving the quality, creativity, and community spirit that have defined the Herrell’s name for decades.

Known for its extensive lineup of award-winning, handcrafted ice cream and signature hot fudge sauces, dairy-free No-Moo® flavors, sorbets, and ice cream cakes, Herrell’s has remained a destination for visitors across New England while continuing to make its ice cream in small batches in Northampton. The Amherst location marks the company’s second retail shop and brings one of the region’s iconic local brands to a growing neighborhood destination.

“Few local brands inspire the kind of affection that Herrell’s does,” said Jacob Robinson, Executive Director of the Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce. “Their permanent Amherst location is a tremendous addition to the Mill District and another reason to spend the day exploring everything this vibrant North Amherst village center has to offer. We look forward to celebrating with the community and helping more people discover this wonderful new home for an iconic Western Mass business.”

“I love the community spirit in Amherst, and it’s exciting to meet and greet longtime fans from the Amherst Area, as well as first-time visitors,” said Judy Herrell, Owner of Herrell’s Ice Cream. “I hope this new location inspires people from other communities to come shop in Amherst!”

“Celebrate Herrell’s and the old-time ice cream counter culture with us,” said Cinda Jones, President of W.D. Cowls Inc. “Come early and visit Mill District shops and restaurants and bring a picnic to our 6 p.m. showing of Grease under the tent!”

“Locally owned businesses like Herrell’s are at the heart of what makes our communities vibrant and unique,” said Matthew S. Sosik, President and CEO of bankESB. “We’re proud to support the Mill District, where local entrepreneurs, residents, and visitors come together to create a thriving destination. It’s especially meaningful to celebrate this occasion as we prepare for our own exciting new chapter, when bankESB becomes TruNorth Bank this August. Together, these milestones reflect progress, and our shared commitment to helping local communities thrive.”
