AMHERST, MA – The Town of Amherst is seeking one resident to join the Board of License Commissioners which oversees and issues licenses for businesses, public events, and activities within Amherst.

Interested residents should submit a Community Activity Form at amherstma.gov/CAF

Applications will be reviewed beginning November 16.

About the Board of License Commissioners

  • The Board of License Commissioners oversees licensing for businesses, public events, and activities within Amherst. This includes issuing, reviewing, suspending, and revoking licenses, with the strongest focus and workload relating to liquor licenses. The Board is responsible for drafting and establishing regulations for licensees. The Board is also the designated body for appeals related to Rental Registration Permits.
  • Meetings are open to the public and are usually scheduled every other Thursday at 5:30 pm. About half of the meetings are in-person at Town Hall and the other half are held virtually on Zoom.  
  • The Board of License Commissioners is comprised of five (5) members appointed by the Town Manager that serve rotating three (3) year terms. No relevant experience or knowledge is required.
  • Members of this board must be registered voters in Amherst.
  • People with any financial interest, directly or indirectly, in the sale or distribution of alcoholic beverages, marijuana, or any regulated substance that may come under the purview of the Board of License Commissioners in any form are not eligible to be members of the Board of License Commissioners.
  • The Board of License Commissioners is responsible for issuing the following licenses:
    • Alcohol Licenses 
    • Auction Permits   
    • Auto Dealer’s Licenses  
    • Collecting and Desling in Used Articles Licenses  
    • Common Victualler’s Licenses   
    • Fuel Storage Licenses  
    • Inn Holder’s Licenses  
    • Keg Licenses  
    • Keno Notices    
    • Live Entertainment License
    • Lunch Cart Licenses
    • Pawnbrokers’ Licenses
    • Secondhand Sales Licenses 
    • Taxi Licenses (Business/Driver)
