The film Turn Every Page, The Adventures of Robert Caro and Robert Gottlieb explores the remarkable fifty-year relationship between two literary legends, writer Robert Caro (Power Broker, The Years of Lyndon Johnson) and his editor Robert Gottlieb, as they race to complete their life’s work. On Monday, February 20, director Lizzie Gottlieb will join Amherst Cinema audiences for a post-screening discussion following the 7:00 p.m. screening.

Film Synopsis
Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Robert Caro and legendary editor Robert Gottlieb, have worked and fought together for 50 years, forging one of publishing’s most iconic and productive partnerships. Caro’s The Power Broker, edited by Gottlieb continues to be a bestseller after 48 years. Now 87, Caro is working to complete the fifth and final volume of his masterwork, The Years of Lyndon Johnson; Gottlieb, 91, waits to edit it. The task of finishing their life’s work looms before them. 

Directed by Gottlieb’s daughter, Lizzie Gottlieb, Turn Every Page explores their remarkable creative collaboration, including the behind-the-scenes drama of the making of Caro’s The Power Broker and the LBJ series. With humor and insight, this unique double portrait reveals the work habits, peculiarities and professional joys of these two ferocious intellects. It arrives at the culmination of a journey that has consumed both their lives and impacted generations of politicians, activists, writers and readers, and furthered our understanding of power and democracy. 

The Power Broker and the first four volumes of The Years of Lyndon Johnson are the seminal biographies of our time. A large audience patiently awaits the fifth and final Lyndon Johnson book which Caro is furiously working to finish. For those that have read any of these books, Turn Every Page is a revelation of the writing process and the mysterious relationship between an author and his editor. Those that haven’t will discover surprising and shocking moments of history that are unveiled in the investigative nature with which Caro approached them.

Lizzie Gottlieb – Director
Amherst College alumna, Lizzie Gottlieb has been directing theater and film in New York for 20 years. She founded an Off-Broadway theater company that developed and produced new plays. As a director, Lizzie has worked with actors including Peter Dinklage, Ethan Hawke, Robert Sean Leonard, Amy Ryan, and Michael Ian Black. Turn Every Page is her third feature documentary. Her film Today’s Man aired on PBS (Independent Lens) and at festivals and conferences worldwide. The film follows the life and struggles of her brother Nicky, a young man on the autism spectrum, as he tries to navigate the world as a young adult. Lizzie’s film Romeo Romeo follows a young lesbian couple as they try to have a baby. It’s a story of a marriage, a heartbreak, and a commitment to a dream, with a surprising ending. It also aired on PBS (America Reframed) and won the 2017 NLGJA award for Excellence in Documentary. Lizzie teaches documentary filmmaking at the New York Film Academy. She is the daughter of editor Robert Gottlieb and actress Maria Tucci and lives in Brooklyn with her family.
